SDFF Challenge + Rules

What if what art says about us is more important than anything we might say about it?

The Challenge:

In the month of January (give or take), we invite you to embark on a Self-Directed Film Festival. You can approach this invitation two different ways: choose, at random, a handful of films to watch OR choose from a handful of films we’ve curated (i.e., this site).

The Curation:

Curation each year is based on this simple criteria: 1) The films explore a non-mainstream narrative and/or 2) offer a unique context or challenging perspective to the zeitgeist of our time.

While we do not agree with all viewpoints espoused by these films (or their filmmakers), we believe it’s important that we approach all art (and each other) with a posture of curiosity, humility and empathy – regardless if we agree or not.

Therefore, we have recommended each of these films in hopes that, through them, we may enter into a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the world around us.

The Rules:

  1. Do not research these films or read reviews before watching! At a typical film festival, you essentially have no idea of what you're walking into. This is part of the fun but, most importantly, allows you to experience the films with minimal bias or influence.

  2. Turn off and/or limit distractions while viewing. This includes cell phones and multi-tasking while watching.

  3. Once you've had the chance to view, email back and let us know what you thought! We'd also love to hear your suggestions on a film (or two or three) that you think we should watch.

**Viewer discretion is advised. These films are not appropriate for young audiences unless otherwise noted. If you need advice on what would be appropriate for your particular situation, feel free to reach out.**
